We are lucky to be located on Little Stukeley Playing Field and our Outdoor Classroom enhances and complements our day to day Montessori curriculum. Each Outdoor Classroom session gives children the opportunity to learn a new skill linked to the survival of man and caring for the environment. Activities include art hunt, mud men, colour matching, camp fires, alphabet trail, map stick and shelter building. The activities reinforce knowledge learnt in the classroom and offer our children opportunities to develop confidence and self-esteem, and to experience a natural outdoor environment.
Each week the children will be participating in a weekly planned session on the Playing Field. They will spend 1 hour in either the morning or afternoon outdoors, whatever the weather! All children will be encouraged to participate and staff will fully support less confident children with these new sessions. All three staff will be present throughout.
The Outdoor classroom sessions will follow a routine that the children will soon become familiar with, including a group discussion, teacher led activity, child led activity and a final reflection.
Daily access to the outdoors when in an Early Years setting is a statutory requirement for all children and we will continue to use the garden daily in addition to our Outdoor Classroom sessions. Outside play is essential for the healthy development of all young children. Learning outside offers the chance to take on new challenges and risks and to investigate in a different way. The physical freedom of learning outside through climbing, exploring, running, jumping and balancing supports development of the young child’s body towards the finer movements that are refined in the Montessori classroom.
